Engineering Technology - Architectural Technology

3-year, Ontario College Advanced Diploma Program

Job Prospects

The Architectural Technologist is a vital member of the building team in the construction industry. The technologist is trained to participate in all phases of the development of a building project.

Architects, engineers, contractors and other members of the building industry have indicated a definite need for trained technical personnel, such as the Architectural Technologist, to assist them in meeting the continuing demands of construction in today's building industry.

Applicants to this Program should note that Civil Engineering Technology and Architectural Technology Programs share a common first year. Subsequent semesters, however, are not common and further study leads to specialization.

Architectural Technology graduates will have broad knowledge of building construction with design ability in the architectural and structural disciplines, working drawing production, computer applications, building specifications and codes.

The curriculum consists of construction methods and architectural design techniques, production of presentation and construction drawings including structural, electrical and mechanical building systems. Emphasis is placed upon modern construction practices conforming to current building codes.

Computer applications are introduced in the first semester and applied to construction management, surveying, structural design, computer assisted drafting, architectural design, mechanical and electrical services. The development of computer skills is integral to the Architectural program ensuring that students become proficient in the use of the computer as a tool of the industry. This enables the graduates to be of immediate value to employers and encourages them to achieve the maximum level of their academic ability.

Building projects during the three years will cover wood frame construction, masonry, steel, concrete and composite construction.
