Flight Attendant
This career choice will either be the most exciting career of your life, or the most disruptive to your personal lifestyle. Perhaps you have applied and/or interviewed for a flight attendant position but did not succeed? You are not alone. Approximately only ten percent of applicants make it to final selection. Competition is tough.
Don't be fooled. Be honest to yourself whether this is the right choice for you. If you need the predictability of a nine to five, Monday to Friday job then pursue other goals. Flight attendants need to be flexible to adjust to constant change. You may have to work during holidays and weekends. There may be times when you cannot attend family functions. Flight delays due to weather or schedule changes may disrupt your plans. This is really a lifestyle and not a career. Airline management are careful in their selection process to make sure their prospective flight attendants are outgoing, with a positive attitude.
Benefits and working schedules improve with seniority. One of the best aspects of the career is the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. You will earn an education that cannot be found in any book. Your work pattern will vary. Schedules are usually based on a monthly pattern as well as seniority. You may find yourself flying six days in a row, three days off and then a four day trip. Or you might have the first five days of the month off and then work a four on, three day off schedule. That depends on the type of airline. As a new hire, you may be on call designated days of the month not know where you might fly if at all.
Pay scales rise and vacation time increases with each year of service. You will usually travel on your own airline for free or a small service charge. Other airlines and travel industries offer deep discounts. Many airlines will offer leaves of absence to pursue things in your personal or professional life. Most companies also offer medical, dental and life insurance in addition to profit sharing and pension plans. Expenses and accommodation are also covered while you are on duty in another city.
At this point, you need to ask yourself, "Am I ready for the challenge?" The best candidate is someone who has a background in dealing with the public. Mature applicants are welcome as they bring a wealth of experience through their life skills.
Airlines like people who take the initiative. That is the primary reason why we developed this introductory program to give you a competitive advantage.
