GEARING UP PROGRAM
Since its inception in 1974, the Canada Safety Council "Gearing Up Motorcycle Training Program" has gained world-wide recognition as the finest rider training program anywhere. The program is designed to build riding skills making motorcycle riding a more enjoyable experience. In the last 16 years, our certified instructors have helped thousands of participants become better, more responsible riders. Program includes M2 licence test.
Courses operate on scheduled dates, rain or shine. Students must have all equipment as noted below.
M2 EXIT (M2X) PROGRAM
This program is designed for riders who are currently eligible to graduate from an M2 licence to a permnanent M designation. To be eligible, participants must have held their M2 licence and have been actively riding for a minimum of 22 months (18 months if you've completed the GEARING UP program). Program includes a skills refresher component that prepares you the M licence road test (also included in this weekend program).
"Gearing Up" Program Participants must:
- Have their M1 Learner's Permit or M licence to participate in the program. Testing for your M2 licence is the final component of the program. The Ministry will issue the M2 to the successful student once he/she presents documentation that we provide, at their local Driver Examination Centre.
- Be 16 years of age or older
- Obtain a certified helmet (DOT or SNELL)
- Provide a long sleeved jacket, gloves, heavy weight pants (leather preferred but denim acceptable), above ankle boots (NO RUNNING SHOES)
- Have appropriate eye protection; sun glasses, protective glasses or helmet visor
- Bring rain gear and/or change of clothes as the weather demands, since the course operates rain or shine
- Possess the skills required to ride a basic, two-wheeled pedal bike
"M2 Exit" (M2X) Participants
Riders use their own bikes for this program. Proof of current registration, insurance, and the ability of your bike to successfully pass a road worthiness inspection are required to participate. Failure to provide proper documentation or pass inspection will disqualify you from the program without refund.
For Safety Reasons:
Participants not wearing the appropriate equipment will not be permitted to ride and will be withdrawn from the course. You will not be entitled to a refund of fees if you are withdrawn for this reason.
Refunds:
Full fees minus a $20.00 administration charge will be refunded only if a written request to withdraw is received in the Registrar's office the Monday before the scheduled course.
NOTE: Please ensure that you are registered in your chosen dates and course reference number (CRN). Course sections are non-transferable and a withdrawal fee ($20) is charged every time a course date is changed.
PLEASE NOTE:
There is an inherent risk in learning to ride any two-wheeled motorized vehicle. All participants will be required to sign a waiver of liability prior to the start of our training programs (click on link above to view waiver). If you are not willing to accept this risk, please do not register for the Gearing Up or M2X Programs.
A Word About Graduated Licencing and our Programs
Motorized vehicle licencing in Ontario has now gone to a GRaduated Licensing System. This included gasoline-powered motorcycles and scooters. As such, participants in our Gearing Up Program must have a valid M1 Learner's Permit or other motorcycle licence in order to participate in the program and attempt the M2 Test. An "M1" licence can be obtained by successfully completing a written knowledge test at your local MTO Office or Drive Test Centre. (NOTE: An M1 licence is only valid for 90 days)
Participats in our M2Exit Program must have a valid M2 licence and should have been actively riding for at least 22 months (18 months if you graduated from our Gearing Up Program). (NOTE: An M2 licence is valid for 5 years)
