A Civil Engineering Technologist plays a key role in the health, safety and economic well being of our communities. As a graduate of our three-year program, you will participate in the design, construction and operation of water distribution, wastewater collection and treatment systems, road and railway systems, and buildings for residential, commercial and industrial uses.
At Confederation College, we keep our program current with, or ahead of, the technology used in the field. We are continually working to upgrade facilities for computerized analysis, design and drafting as well as electronic surveying used for design and construction. As a qualified Civil Engineering Technologist, you will find employment in facility planning and design, cost estimating and control, and construction inspection and management for new capital projects. Once the construction is completed, technologists are responsible for the effective management and maintenance of the finished product, ensuring services to the public remain reliable.
Employment Opportunities:
Employment opportunities in this field are available locally, regionally and around the world. As a graduate of this program you will find entry level opportunities with consultants, contractors and government at the municipal, provincial and federal levels. With experience, you can expect to move on to management positions within these organizations.
The demand for qualified technologists is expected to increase steadily. Existing infrastructure in Canada has aged to the point that extensive repair is required. The challenge associated with this work is that often it must be carried out while maintaining service to the public. At the same time, new construction activities continue to provide on-going employment opportunities.
Career categories include positions such as Surveyor, Drafter, Designer, Lab Technician, QA/QC Inspector, Estimator, Project Manager, Site Supervisor, Public Works Administrator, Roads Supervisor or Sewer and Water Supervisor.
Students in the Community - Co-op Work Placements and Employment Opportunities
Students have the option of registering for a 16-week co-op placement in the summer either between first and second year or at the end of second year. The College has a co-op coordinator who facilitates placement with an employer in the environmental or ecosystem management sector. The co-op experience provides participants with valuable on-the-job training and networking opportunities as well as summer employment. Students may be required to relocate for the summer to complete an appropriate placement. Some placements may require living in the field or at an industrial site for extended periods. Occasionally students take an unpaid placement to gain experience and contacts with a particular employer.
Opportunities with the following organizations have been available:
- Environment Canada
- Ontario Ministry of the Environment
- Placerdome Inc
- Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA)
- City of Thunder Bay
