The Concurrent Disorders Graduate Certificate program is designed to provide graduates of social services, community services and health services programs with the specific skill set to work with individuals struggling with mental health and addiction problems. The program is specifically aimed at graduates from existing community service, social science and health science diploma or degree programs to provide an advanced level of learning and a comparable level application of knowledge and skills.
Students in the Concurrent Disorders program will be trained to work in addiction/mental health-specific settings and the broad spectrum of social or health service agencies where addictions/mental health related issues are likely to occur. For practitioners already working in this field, this certificate provides a specific knowledge and skill set applicable to clients affected by addictive behavior and/or mental health-related issues. The program is aimed at providing a broad based knowledge and skill enhancement that would be applicable to a variety of agency workplace settings.
Integral to the design of the program is the focus of working with all populations including aboriginal people. All courses in the program will include this focus to ensure maximum relevance to the service needs throughout the Northwestern Ontario region.
The program will be delivered by qualified, experienced instructors, through an alternate delivery, distance education and e-Learning format, to allow for regional student access. The student's learning will be complemented and consolidated through a 320 hour field placement, supervised and assessed by qualified, professional practitioners in the field.
