Testimonials
The field of communications is exciting, fast paced and demanding. Although I didn't go into my post-secondary education thinking that I would want to be a professional communicator, the job found me because of its perfect fit. Successful communicators can think and plan strategically, implement with precision, meet tight deadlines and change direction at a moment's notice. Making recommendations to senior management may be daunting to some, but the communicator seeks the opportunity to propose, implement and provide proof positive results to key influencers. As an independent communications consultant, I am able to work in a variety of fields and provide input to a number of different strategies. I am also able to balance my personal and career lives with the flexibility that only independence can bring.

Advertising/ Public Relations Consultant Inc.
I came to Corporate Communications following a career in journalism and arts management. I wish there had been a program available to me here in Thunder Bay when I was starting out. That would have been a welcome addition to the theory and skills I learned through self-learning and my professional association, the International Association of Business Communicators. Corporate Communications is an ideal profession for people who enjoy diversity. This field demands a wide range of skills. At the same time, there are tremendous growth opportunities. There's everything from hands on work such as special events, publications, media relations and more to strategic communication planning and, at the highest level, working with senior managers to add value to an organization. This is a great field for people who enjoy making a difference.
~Karen Lewis
Manager, Corporate Communications, City of Thunder Bay
As the Communications Officer at Lakehead Public Schools, I am responsible primarily for media interactions and the promotion of programs and services offered by the school board. This position has provided countless opportunities to develop communication and marketing strategies. Most recently, I have been developing communication strategies to address the current long-term school accommodation strategy. Many potential changes are on the horizon and effective and planned communications are needed more than ever.
I can honestly say that I love what I do. Communications and education are a perfect fit. I love being able to visit our schools and work with students to show our community what they are learning. The communications/media opportunities are endless. I am only limited to the amount of time in a day. There are always good stories to counter-balance the negative ones.
With technology, the world has become a smaller place. For example, it is now possible to hold news conferences simultaneously at a number of sites through video conferencing. We can also fax, e-mail and post news releases to the Internet, and send photos and documents to anywhere in the world. Communication has become instantaneous, and the profession must continue to evolve to meet the many challenges of communicating both now and in the future.

Communications Officer, Lakehead Public Schools
If you are looking for a fast-paced, exciting career that allows you to work in a wide variety of interesting situations, then corporate communications may be for you!
This field offers outstanding opportunity for growth and development, while challenging you to achieve your personal best. From writing and publishing to advertising and media relations, or communication planning and internal communications, there is always a new challenge ahead. As a communications officer, I have had the pleasure of working with everyone from the CAO and members of city council, to citizens in need of information. Each situation is a new adventure waiting to unfold.
I am a proud graduate of the Arts Administration Program at Confederation College (1995). While in the program, I became very interested in communications. Upon graduation, I worked in the field of advertising before becoming the corporate relations coordinator for the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium. Three years ago, I became the communications officer for the City of Thunder Bay.
Consider corporate communications and unleash your potential.
