The field of Early Childhood Education is experiencing significant growth and diversification. A career in Early Childhood Education offers you a challenging and dynamic opportunity to specialize in the education, care and support of children and families.
This two-year program includes studies in child development, curriculum planning, and theory of Early Childhood Education, as well as the opportunity to participate in field practicum placements in a variety of Early Childhood settings.
Employment Opportunities:
As an Early Childhood Education graduate you will qualify to work in Daycare Centres, Nursery Schools, Child and Family centers, private home daycare, child development, early learning JK/SK programs, and special needs support partners. In addition, you will also be eligible to apply for certification through the Association of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario.
Career categories include prospective positions such as Early Childhood Educator, Day Care Worker, Nursery School Worker, Family Resource Center Coordinator, Early Childhood Education JK/SK, Assistant or Special Needs Support Worker.
Admission Requirements:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C), or Open (O) preparation levels.
- or successful completion of the Mature Student Assessment.
- or appropriate credits from the Academic and Career Entrance program (ACE).
And Courses Required: Grade 12 College or University Preparation English.
It is strongly recommended that students applying to this program have good communication skills and volunteer experience in an early childhood setting.
Applicants not meeting these admission requirements are encouraged to consider the College Access or General Arts and Science Certificate or Diploma programs; students who successfully complete one of these programs would be eligible to apply to programs in the Community Services area.
Physical Demands:
As an Early Childhood Education student, you must possess physical capabilities which would facilitate the lifting and supporting of children.
Energy and stamina are required to respond to the high physical demands associated with the role of an educator. You must react promptly and competently in response to matters of safety.
Other Requirements:
You must have the following program requirements by the end of September:
- Immunization and Communicable Disease’s Form
- Up-to-date Immunization including TB Skin Test
- Standard First Aid, Infant/Child CPR Certificate - Level C
- A recent Criminal Reference with check must be provided to the Program Coordinator at program registration and at the beginning of each academic year. All costs associated with police checks, testing and proof of certification are the responsibility of you, the applicant. The check is used by employers in this field as a screening requirement of field placement and employment. A criminal record may prevent agencies from providing you with a field placement experience, thus blocking your ability to complete program requirements. Outstanding charges, recent convictions and person-related crimes are of particular concern. For more information, contact the Program Coordinator.
Program Continuation Criteria:
To proceed into a subsequent semester and to graduate, the you must have a minimum "60%" grade in each course prefixed with "ED".
Articulation Agreements:
A transfer agreement exists between the Confederation College ECE program and the Lakehead University School of Education.
As a graduate from this program, you would be eligible to access articulation agreements with the following universities:
- Lakehead University
- Athabasca University
