Residence Construction Ramps Up

(July, 9 2015) -

Work continues on the construction of Spruce House and Cedar House - the two new residence units located adjacent to the Fitness Centre bubble...

Although there is still much work to be completed before the opening in September, Brian Freeman (VP Campus Living Centres) advises that the construction of these units is always a "sprint to the finish".  He has confidence that Residence will be ready for occupancy as expected.

On a related note, use of the A lot for parking has been finalized.  This parking location will be repaved and integrated with the roadway to the new residence.  Parking will require use of a red parking pass in September.  The lot will be monitored with regular patrols by our parking enforcement officers.  Red passes will be provided to Fitness Centre community members with 50 spots available and 32 Red passes will be available for sale only to residents of Spruce and Tamarack houses.

Until further notice, Fitness Centre members must continue to park in the GREEN lots

Thank you

Fitness Centre - Community Member Survey

Greetings Community Member of the College Fitness Centre,

As you are undoubtedly aware, Confederation College has initiated a project to develop a replacement for the obsolescent Fitness Centre and The Bubble. Ongoing operational costs, impending maintenance liabilities, and changing requirements influenced the decision to go ahead.

The redevelopment of the Fitness Centre is one component of the College’s Student Village concept. You have seen the first phase of the Student Village as two new student residences being built adjacent to the Bubble. This second phase is to promote wellness.

The College had broad consultations with stakeholders at the outset of the Student Village project. Subsequently we have had extensive collaboration with our Student Union on the requirements for the new Wellness Centre. We are now turning our attention to you – the community user – to give us feedback on what you want to see in the new facility.

College administration held a community members session earlier this year in February. It was clear that members had a keen interest in providing input. Accordingly we are surveying all community members for their thoughts on the design and requirements of the College Wellness Centre.

The community members survey is available at www.surveymonkey.com/r/FZZ99P9. Please take a few minutes to provide your comments. Although we prefer feedback using the electronic version of the survey available, you can submit a printed survey to the Fitness Centre front desk. Submission will be received until Aug 10, 2015.

As an update to the Wellness Centre project, some key achievements are

  • Issuance of a Design-Build project Request for Proposals to develop a Wellness Centre for the College within a total fixed budget, to be completed for September 2017
  • Award of the RFP competition to Tom Jones Corp. Tom Jones has partnered with FORM Architecture to complete the Design phase of the project.
  • FORM Architecture is currently reviewing various factors to begin design of the facility: connectivity to the Shuniah Bldg., code implications, site services, and the initial functional requirements outlined in the RFP.
  • An initial meeting with FORM, Tom Jones, College staff and other consultants was held to review LEED certification requirements (showing our commitment to sustainability).

Finally, the College appreciates your patience with the construction activity in the Fitness Centre parking area. As the new residence buildings are completed for September, the A Lot parking area will be completely repaved. Parking in the renovated A Lot will be restricted to Fitness Centre community members and at most 32 residents. The area will be under regular parking attendant patrol, and measures are being taken to encourage residents to acquire parking passes in other areas. We do not expect parking to be issue in September.

Thank you again for your support and patience in helping us to shape a facility that suits you,

Fitness Centre,
