Emergencies

In the case of an emergency please call 922 (Campus Response).

Allergy Injections

Clients that require allergy injections must make an appointment to see a clinic physician prior to administration of their first injection at the Health Centre; this follows for each and every year. Clients receiving allergy injections are required to wait for a minimum of 20 minutes after they receive their allergy injection. Therefore, appointments cannot be made after 4:00 p.m.. If a client requires allergy testing, they must book an appointment in order to receive a referral to an allergy specialist or can call specialist directly for an appointment (Dr.B.Sweet 345-7555) .

The following qualified aviation medical doctor is available to perform aviation medicals:

Massage Therapy

Heather Dilley RMT will be available at the College Health Centre. Appointments can be booked by calling 475-6169. Staff are covered for these services through Sunlife and college students are covered 80% through their student health plan.

Medical Examination Requested by 3rd Parties

Medical examinations requested by third parties (i.e. Insurance companies, schools, and places of employment) are no longer covered by OHIP. The cost of these services will be charged to the patient.

  • Others $65.00
Cancellations

If you can not make it to your scheduled appointment, please call the day before or the morning of your appointment to notify us of your cancellation in order to prevent a $20 charge for missed appointments.

Depo-Provera Injections

Depo-Provera is a method of birth control in which hormonal injections are given every 12 weeks. More information is available at the Health Centre.

If you feel that Depo-Provera maybe the best method of birth control for you, please make an appointment with a physician to discuss your options.

For Depo-Provera Injections:

  • Obtain a prescription from a physician
  • Get the prescription filled at the pharmacy of your choice
  • Return to the Health Centre with your medication for administration
  • Book a follow up appointment with the physician prior to your second injection

Clients receiving Depo-Provera injections are required to wait for a minimum of 20 minutes after they receive their injection. Therefore, appointments can not be made after 4:00 p.m..

NOTE: Depo-Provera injections will not protect you against any sexual transmitted diseases (STD's). If you would like more information regarding Depo-Provera injections, please feel free to drop by the Health Centre for an information pamphlet.

Emergency Contraception

Emergency Contraception Pills (ECP's) should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. The earlier the pill is taken, the better; therefore, it is best to talk to a health care provider as soon as possible.

Pregnancy testing and emergency contraception are available at the Health Centre. If there are any concerns regarding a possible pregnancy or protection precautions failed, it is best to try and book an appointment. If there are no appointments available, please call or drop in and ask to speak with a Registered Nurse.

NOTE: Emergency contraception does not protect you against any sexual transmitted diseases. If you would like more information regarding emergency contraception pills, please feel free to drop by the Health Centre for some information pamphlets.

Health Education

Health Education will be provided with regard to the following:

  • Nutrition
  • Cholesterol
  • Birth Control & Pregnancy
  • Sexuality
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Blood pressure
  • Stress management
  • Others

Health promotional events will be scheduled various times throughout the year. A wide variety of health pamphlets, literature, and videos are available for individual or classroom use.

Hepatitis B Immunizations

Student requesting or requiring Hepatitis B immunization, must book an appointment to see a physician prior to administration. A physician must be in the clinic at the time of administration.

Hepatitis B immunizations are partially covered under the student plan. You can drop by or call the Health Centre at 475-6169 for more information.

For Hepatitis B injections:

  • Obtain a prescription from the physician
  • Get the prescription filled at a pharmacy of your choice
  • Bring it back to the Health Centre for administration.

Hepatitis B immunizations are a vaccine series of 3 injections:

  1. The first injection will be administered during the first Hepatitis B immunization visit
  2. The second injection will be administered 1 month after the first injection
  3. The third injection will be administered 6 months after the second injection

Clients receiving Hepatitis B injections are required to wait for a minimum of 20 minutes receiving an injection. Therefore, appointments can not be made after 4:00 p.m..

NOTE: It is recommended that post Hepatitis B immunization blood work be done within 6 months after your vaccine series in order to determine if you have adequate protection against Hepatitis B.

Medical Notes

The on-duty physician can issue a note in situations due to illness or injury resulting in significant time loss, which will disrupt academic or practical work. The student or staff member must see the physician at time of illness, or injury.

Physician Clinics

Physicians will be available at various times throughout the day and week for appointments as required by students and staff. Appointments are preferred. However, depending on bookings, appointments can sometimes be made the same day.

Referrals

Students or staff requiring a referral to a specialist will need to make an appointment to discuss their need with a physician.

Staff and Faculty Health Services

Staff and faculty are required to pay an annual $50 user fee for services provided by the Health Centre. This fee covers the following services:

  • On-site physician appointments
  • Minor first aid
  • Health counseling
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Nurse assessments
  • Request for transfer of health records

NOTE: This does not pertain to physician services covered by your medical insurance.

TB Skin Testing and Documentation

TB skin testing will be provided by booking an appointment with one of our physicians at no charge.  Students are required to return 2 days after their TB skin test to have it read by a physician or registered nurse.

The college policy requires students in the following listed programs to have a TB skin test within 6 months of admission to their program:

  • Child and Youth Worker
  • Dental Assisting
  • Dental Hygiene
  • Developmental Service Worker
  • Early Childhood Education

Treatment for Warts
