Despite the newly announced unemployment level of 10%, hotel giant Starwood Hotels is publicizing the fact it's generating new jobs in an economy that badly needs them. Starwood expects to create more than 12,000 jobs worldwide this year as it opens 80 t0 100 hotels. If met, the growth would match last year's pace.

About half of the jobs for 2010 will be created in the USA with openings of hotels such as the Westin Austin at The Domain, Sheraton Brooklyn New York Hotel and Four Points by Sheraton Biloxi Beach Boulevard, Starwood says in a statement being released this morning. New hotels require the hiring of a range of people from hotel managers to restaurant workers to housekeepers.
"Today, the travel industry employs 7.7 million Americans – more than double that of the auto industry – and travel is uniquely positioned to create even more jobs as the economy continues to recover," Starwood CEO Frits van Paaschen said in the statement. "After a year of hunkering down and cutting costs, companies are driving their topline again. By definition this means getting back on the road, which not only benefits their own business, but also helps spur job creation."
Starwood expects to see similar demand for hotel jobs this year as last year, when record numbers of applicants applied for hotel jobs. Examples:
- More than 10,000 people applied for 400 job positions at the W Hollywood Hotel & Residences, which is about to open.
- More than 10,000 people applied for 300 positions at the W Washington D.C., which opened last summer.
- More than 400 people applied for 30 housekeeping jobs at the Sheraton Augusta Hotel in Georgia, which opened in December.
Starwood operates 982 hotels and resorts in more than 100 countries. Last April, van Paasschen recited the same growth numbers while serving as Hotel Check-In's first guest blogger.
