"KYRC" - "Know Your Regional Campus" - Sioux Lookout Campus
(Sioux Lookout, February, 17 2012) -
Our Sioux Lookout Campus, the fourth stop in the western leg of our
journey, is located in the former "Wellington" School building. It is a shared facility with Contact North, Keewatin Patricia District School Board, and Sioux-Hudson Employment Services.
Sioux Lookout is a tourist destination for those who love the outdoors. It is situated on Pelican Lake, part of the English River-Lac Seul Water System.
At the dock located downtown, numerous float planes and boats sit ready to venture into the great northern wilderness areas ...

Early morning tranquility on Pelican Lake in Sioux Lookout
This article is part of a series entitled "Know Your Regional Campuses" (KYRC) - Sioux Lookout Campus ... an opportunity to become more familiar with our regional campuses, some of the people who work there, and the unique communities in which they reside, along with a little history of the area.

Meno Ya Win Health Centre
Sioux Lookout is the home of the new, state-of-the-art Meno Ya Win Health Centre and the Jeremiah McKay Kabayshewekamik Hostel which have an Aboriginal focus that is very apparent in both the building architecture and in the decor. From the exterior, the main entrance to the Hostel looks like a huge ceremonial drum. When you enter the main front doors, it appears as though you have just entered a teepee. In another entry way, the long entrance hall is shaped on both sides in a long gentle curve with the flooring completing the illusion of a curved feather on the shaft of an arrow.

Located in the Health Centre next to this is an entrance into a "Healing Circle Room" which has been specially designed to host Aboriginal ceremonies, complete with a large smudge pit in the centre where the smoke wafts up into a grand opening in the ceiling.

There are many resorts in the area offering great fishing or hunting and many are perfect for a family vacation. If you're looking for a very secluded remote cabin, there are many outposts cabins to fly to from Sioux Lookout. You can even fly to all-inclusive American Plan fly-in resorts. The annual Blueberry Festival is held every August.

At Ojibway Provincial Park about 25 kilometers southwest of Sioux Lookout on Highway 72, you'll find labrador tea, wild rice, lady slipper and water lily. The campground on Little Vermilion Lake has a sandy beach for swimmers. Eleven kilometers of picturesque hiking trails wind through the backwoods. South of Sioux Lookout is the village of Hudson and beautiful Vermilion Lake, known for its clear deep water and Big Vermilion Beach, one of the nicest swimming spots in the area. Sioux Lookout is also known as the "Hub of the North" as it provides essential services to many first nation communities.
