Program Description

Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS) is funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to provide adults 19 years and older (with some exceptions), opportunities to develop the academic skills necessary for the achievement of education or employment goals. To qualify, one must be a resident of Ontario and legally eligible for work.

The program offers an individualized approach to learning. After completing the initial Orientation and Career Planning workshop, learners will have developed a training plan that will map out the requirements for meeting the goals set. Teachers are friendly, caring professionals and provide learners with the support necessary for achieving academic success.

Each year, over 100 adults join classes on the main Thunder Bay campus, and enjoy the benefits of college life while moving toward their goals.

Math

There are 2 streams of math: business and technology. The program coordinator will work with you to determine which stream meets your goal requirements. Our highest level of math, ACE, is equivalent to grade 12.

Communications (English)

The communications program consists of reading, writing and speaking and listening skills and provides learners with the skills required for post-secondary program entrance. Our highest level of communications, ACE, is equivalent to grade 12.

Science

Biology, chemistry and physics are offered, and meet the requirements of college post-secondary programs where science is an application requirement or where a science is recommended. These sciences are offered at the ACE or grade 12 equivalent level. Certain levels of math and communications are required for the sciences and your teacher or program coordinator will advise you in your planning. A pre-science course will be offered for those who need development skills before signing up for any of the sciences.

Workshops

Workshops are provided in the areas of speaking and listening and self-management/self-direction. These workshops provide the communication skills, student success skills and employability skills set out by MTCU and are part of course requirements.

Computers

We have a dedicated lab with 24 computers and internet access. Students use the computers for skills development, to complete assignments, and for research purposes. Computer workshops are provided for skill development.
