How to Troubleshoot Problems / Computer Q&A

Using the Computers in the Library

Q: How do I log on to a computer in the Library?

A: Confederation College students (with some exceptions) are entitled to receive a photo ID card which lists your individual College e-mail address and student ID number. The username can be found by looking at the first part of your email address published on your student card. With some common last names, you could also have a number as the last digit in your username

  • Example: Student with the name of David Smith
  • E-mail address = dsmith@confederationc.on.ca
  • Username = dsmith

A student’s initial password will be 11 digits and will consist of the first initial of your first name (capitalized), the first initial of your last name (lower case), and the last 9 digits of your  student ID.

  •  Example: David Smith's student number is 22663100198715
  • Password = Ds100198715

Once you have successfully determined your College account username and password combination you will be able to a access the following college systems and applications.

  • Student lab and classroom computers
  • Student network file server and J-drive
  • Student information (Banner) system
  • Student Web Access Outlook E-mail system
  • Student printing resources
  • College Blackboard system

For further information or help on connecting your device to the college wireless network, please contact the Computer Services Help Desk or call 475-6488.

Q: How can I save documents I am working on in the Library?
A: Each student is free to save, retrieve, and delete files, as well as manage folders on their network drive space (called the student 'J-drive') . The student J-drive is a shared hard drive space on the network server that is private for each account. Each student has been allocated 100MB of space on the J-drive to store their files on. To save a file to the J-drive:

  1. Select "File", then "Save As..." from within the computer program being used.
  2. Navigate through the available drive letters to find the drive letter "J".
  3. Click on the J-Drive to select it (this is the student's personal network space).
  4. Enter a file name and click on the "Save" button.
