Students in the Mining Basics program will acquire essential employability skills in such areas as communications, mathematics, and computer applications. Vocational outcomes for the program focus on mining methods and operations, surveying, map reading, geology, and technical drawing.
Graduates of the Mining Basics program are able to choose to enter the workforce after receiving their one-year College Certificate or can enter directly into the second year of the Mining Engineering Technician programs at Cambrian or Northern College.
Workforce opportunities exist in areas such as assisting geologists with core sampling, mapping, and prospecting, preparing reports, surveying or functioning as part of an engineering team, coping with situations in the field, office, or underground. Other typical fields of work include drafting; environmental studies; and industrial, geological, and geophysical fieldwork.
For further information, contact David Archibald at Confederation College.
