The Native Child and Family Services program is an exciting, innovative program that prepares you to work with Aboriginal families, children and communities in the field of human services. The program blends Aboriginal and Generalist human services approaches to ensure that you have all the skills and knowledge you need to work effectively with Aboriginal children, youth, families and communities. If your goal is to promote the health and well-being of Aboriginal families, children and youth, then the Native Child and Family Services program is the program for you.

This two year diploma blends  generalist social services practices with holistic Aboriginal approaches to helping. It   provides students with  values, knowledge and practical skills needed to meet the growing demand for front line workers in prevention, intervention, treatment programs and in child welfare.  Two field placements and an optional CO-OP give students lots of opportunity to gain valuable work experience that will ensure that they graduate with confidence in the application of their skills and knowledge.

Graduates of this program will also develop a culturally competent personal practice model for working with at risk children and families, preparing them to work in a dynamic range of inter-cultural agencies that support Aboriginal children, youth, families and communities. 

Beginning in September 2015 this program will be made available in partnership with Contact North throughout Ontario on a bi-annual basis.


Career Highlights

Students are widely sought out for positions in a variety of social services settings including Child Welfare Agencies, Indian Friendship Centres, Women's Shelters, Urban Aboriginal Organizations, On reserve services. They are skilled to work in prevention, intervention, advocacy and recovery with children, youth, families and communities.
