Welcome to Negahneewin College which is a part of Confederation College's Thunder Bay Campus in the City of Thunder Bay. We are the centre of Indigenous Programming and Student Support Services for First Nation, Metis and Inuit students at Confederation College.
We offer certificate programs that include College Access and Aboriginal and Canadian Relations. Our current diploma offerings include the Aboriginal Community Advocacy and Native Child and Family Services programs.
Our faculty are experienced teachers with postgraduate
credentials in Sociology, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Anishnabemowin. Our Student Support Services staff are all well-qualified in the areas Psychology, Social Work, and Education. All these staff have worked in Aboriginal community contexts making their work experiences highly relevant to Negahneewin.
We are working with our colleagues across the College in a variety of ways such as sharing our Indigenous Knowledge through the development of "Aboriginal Learning Outcomes" which are being introduced across all curricula. Our faculty and staff collaborate through formal committees to represent Indigenous perspectives. This includes Academic Council, Prior Learning Recognition, and the faculty-centred work of the Teaching and Learning Centre. In regards to Student Success our staff work through a case management process and a sound referral system to assist learners with their colleagues in Student Success. Overall, our collaborative, student-centered approach to Aboriginal education is practiced by all of our staff in a consistent manner across the College.
We operate an Aboriginal Student Drop-In Centre known as "APIWIN"on the third floor of the Shuniah Building. This is a quiet and safe learning space where students gather to rest and study. Students can have a cup of coffee and may use laptops as required. We offer snacks and an occasional lunch in this space.
Negahneewin College has also been engaged in academic and community development in the south core of the City in a storefront location which is called "The Learning Cafe." This large and comfortable learning space is partly outreach and access focused but has been mainly used for community development supports for current learners, the neighbourhood known as "Evergreen" and for northern students who are making their transition to the College.
