FEBRUARY 27TH IS PINK DAY ~ Wear Pink To End Homophobia and Bullying On Campus

(February, 20 2013) -

WHY PINK?

Wednesday February 27th is National Pink Day. You may see a larger than average number of people sporting anything ranging from rose to neon, blush to fuchsia all in support of ending homophobia and homophobic bullying on our campus...A spin off of a national campaign inspired by two Nova Scotia teenagers in September of 2007 to end homophobic bullying at their school targeted at a grade nine student who was called names and harassed about his sexuality simply because of his choice to wear a pink shirt to school. This campaign is growing nationally, and today marks our third annual pink day. Check out the link for more information http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/09/18/pink-tshirts-students.html

Pink for the last fifty years has been considered to be a feminine colour, but this was not always the case. Prior to World War II, pink was historically a male colour as it was an offshoot of red. During the holocaust the pink triangle was one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, used by the Nazis to identify male prisoners in concentration camps who were sent there because of their homosexuality. Pink was chosen not because it meant the wearer was feminine, but because they liked other men. Every prisoner had to wear a triangle on his or her jacket, the color of which was to categorize him or her according "to his kind."
