This two-year program provides you with the skills and knowledge to practice emergency pre-hospital medical care and to function as an integral member of the health team in assisting victims of accident or illness. As a graduate of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to apply relevant theory, practice safely and competently, as well as comply with current legislation, regulations, standards and established policies and procedures.
Employment Opportunities:
As a graduate of this program, you will be eligible to write the Ministry of Health Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant Certification Examination (A-EMCA). If successful, you can be employed as a Primary Care Paramedic in the province of Ontario. Graduates have been employed in ambulance services, in the field of health and safety, rescue, and dispatch.
Career paths include prospective positions in air and land ambulance services, hospitals, fire departments, government agencies, manufacturing firms or in the private sector and include position titles such as Primary Care Paramedic, Advanced Care Paramedic, and Critical Care Paramedic.
Admission Requirements:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C), or Open (O) preparation levels.
- or successful completion of the Mature Student Assessment.
- or appropriate credits from the Academic and Career Entrance program (ACE).
Additional Courses Required:
Grade 12 English (College or University Preparation), Grade 11 Math (College or University Preparation), Grade 11 or 12 Biology (College or University Preparation), Grade 11 or 12 Chemistry (College or University Preparation). Minimum final grade of 75% in each required course. If you are currently enrolled in the required course, you must have a midterm and final mark of 75% or higher to qualify for selection/admission.
---
Note: To be considered in the final selection, you are required to take a pre-admission fitness test. We expect you to meet 70% of the final performance standards before entry. Please complete the pre-entry fitness form sent to you. Instructions are contained on the form, as well as detailed expectations. You will be re-tested during the second week of orientation at the College to confirm results. Your will need to sign-off a performance agreement acknowledging where you are at now with your fitness level and College expectations through the Paramedic program. At this point, there is no PASS OR FAIL, only formal acknowledgement regarding your fitness levels. If you are below the 70% fitness standard, then consider entry into the Paramedic program at another time.
If you do not possess the necessary admission requirements (or equivalency), we encourage you to consider our Pre-Health Sciences program which will provide the necessary preparation to apply to this program. Completion of the Pre-Health Sciences program does not guarantee admission to the Paramedic Program in a subsequent year.
Physical Demands:
This program demands physical capabilities to facilitate the lifting and supporting of patients, maneuvering hospital equipment and fine motor skills for completion of technical tasks.
- Students will be tested regularly in the program to ensure they are meeting these fitness levels. A Paramedic student requires a high level of aerobic fitness, flexibility and strength. The Paramedic Program Standards from the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities state that the graduate has to reliably demonstrate the ability to lift. Perform 2-person lifts and transfers, in a safe, smooth controlled manner, of patients weighing up to 95 kg (210 lbs) utilizing appropriate patient lifting equipment (Plus 10 lbs. of added equipment) by the end of second semester. Candidates are strongly recommended to complete a Canadian Physical Activity, Fitness and Lifestyle Appraisal (CPAFLA). It is expected that the candidate scores at least average level in that appraisal. Candidates must also be able to "Dead Lift" (squat) at least 45 kg (100 pounds) prior to enrolment. See "Paramedic Program Brochure" link on this web page for full details.
Other Requirements:
To qualify for clinical/field placements, students must present the following prior to the start of classes:
- Completion of the Confederation College's "Immunization Communicable Disease's Form" that is mailed with your Offer of Admission. This must demonstrate proof of immunization. This form can also be found by a linkage on this web page "To Paramedic Applicant Info Page ... "
- Proof of current Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR certificate. Students are required to maintain an up-to-date Standard First Aid and CPR (level HCP) certificate throughout the program. Ambulance Act standards state, CPR certificates must be renewed annually. Agencies do not offer CPR (HCP level) courses often; therefore please look into this EARLY in May or June to get a course date for July/ August that you can take.
- The potential student should be computer literate.
The following must be completed:
- An Ontario full Class G driver's license must be submitted by the end of second semester (June) for entry into
AB 325 and AB331 in the fall. You must have a Class "F" driver's license to work on ambulnace, but that is between you and your employer. - To be eligible for participation in field placement, a student must not have been convicted of any criminal offence for which the student has not yet been pardoned. An unpardoned criminal record involving a conviction related to “Moral Turpitude” will result in the student not being able to participate in the field placement courses; and therefore, prevent the student from graduating. A recent and valid (Level 1/ Basic) criminal reference check (CRC) is therefore required to enable the student to progress through this program and be current within 10 months.
Note:
Any costs associated with acquiring a Criminal Reference Check (CRC) will be the responsibility of the student applicant.
Paramedic Clinical Placements:
Confederation College reserves the right to determine the location of clinical placements based on marks and performance. External city placements costs are the students' responsibility.
Program Continuation Criteria:
In order to register in Year II of the Paramedic Program, students must have successfully completed all of the courses in Year I of the program.
Selection Criteria:
Provided other admission requirements have been met, applicants with the highest selection scores will be offered admission. Selection is determined by averaging results in the required English, Math, Biology and Chemistry courses. Applicants with the highest combined scores are provided offers of Admission. A waitlist will also be established using the selection scores obtained.
