The Personal Support Worker Program is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills to meet the expectations of this role. Personal Support Workers work under the supervision of Registered Nurses or Registered Practical Nurses.
Based on the individual needs of each person that they support, the Personal Support Worker (PSW) assists persons with the tasks of daily living such as; home management, personal care, family responsibilities, social and recreational activities. These services are provided in homes and apartments in the community, in long-term care facilities, congregate housing settings, in the workplace and in educational facilities. This program is intended to meet the Ministry of Health guidelines established by its Long Term Care Division.
Employment Opportunities:
Graduates may find employment in homes for the aged, community based facilities, supportive housing and private homes.
Admission Requirements:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C), or Open (O) preparation levels.
- or successful completion of the Mature Student Assessment.
- or appropriate credits from Academic and Career Entrance.
Additional Courses Required: Grade 12 College or University preparation English.
Physical Demands:
Personal Support Worker students must have physical capabilities that would facilitate the lifting and supporting of clients/residents, maneuvering equipment and completing technical tasks requiring fine motor skills and precision of movements.
Travel
Students are responsible for their own transportation to complete clinical and field placement requirements. Regional students may be required to travel to other communities, including Thunder Bay, on occasion. All costs associated with the travel and accommodations (including, but not limited to, transportation, meals, accommodations, etc.) will be the responsibility of the individual students.
Clinical
Shift work, days and evenings, may be required during long-term care clinical placements.
Other Requirements:
Prior to clinical placements, students must present the following:
- A current Criminal Reference Check (Vulnerable Screen).
- Completion of Confederation College Immunization and Communicable Disease’s Form demonstrating proof of immunization, which includes a 2 step-TB skin test.
- Proof of Standard First Aid and CPR - Level C certificate. Students are required to be current throughout the program, CPR needs to be recertified every year.
- A recent Criminal Reference Check (Vulnerable Screen) - must be provided to the Program Coordinator at program registration and at the beginning of the academic year. All costs associated with police checks, testing and proof of certification are the responsibility of the applicant. The check is used by employers in this field as a screening requirement of field placement and employment. A criminal record may prevent you from participating in field placement experiences, thus blocking you from completing program requirements. COMPLETE this process early!
