Aboriginal Science Forum
This exciting activity will engage the aboriginal youth of northwestern Ontario in science-based issues that directly affect them and their communities. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place entries. Let’s Talk Science volunteers will work collaboratively with the participating schools to offer ideas and mentoring as participating students work on their projects. The science fair is geared mostly towards grades 9 and 10 applied aboriginal kids – that’s the level we are getting from the region – and we would like to inspire those students who would normally not be participating in fairs of this type (academic leveled kids get lots of opportunities). The full day of activities includes some guest lectures on traditional science topics, a luncheon for all participants and their chaperones, showcasing of the displays (had a lot of media attention last year – CBC Radio, Chronicle Journal and Wawatay News), and the judging and awards ceremony.

ACTIVITIES
All Aboard
The Regional Planning Team would like to support schools throughout Northwestern Ontario to visit the college for a variety of reasons. These could include tours, activities arranged at the college associated with some of their curriculum expectations (especially trades and technology) or with SMSM reach ahead opportunities. In the past many schools were reluctant to come to the college because of financial restraints. It is hope that with the SCWI financial support for travel that many more schools will consider visiting the college. The RPT believe that the more exposure that students have at the college - the more this pathway will be considered by students.

New Teacher Connection
Over the last few years, the Regional Planning Team provided opportunities for Northwestern Ontario grade 7-12 teachers to visit Confederation College facilities. When this initiative started it was apparent that the majority of teachers in Northwestern Ontario have not had the opportunity of visiting the College. As a result of these initiatives, over 100 teachers have experienced the college and are better able to assist students with their decision- making regarding high school and post secondary pathways. It is therefore importantfor these teachers to have first-hand knowledge and experiences with college programs and facilities. The Team would like to offer this experience to any new techers (elementary and secondary) including Faculty of Ed students who have not had the opportunity of visiting the college.
