Terms and Conditions
This is a generic math course to help any incoming and current Confederation College students.
Each student will be required to officially register for the course and pay a tuition fee plus purchase the textbook; "Introduction to Technical Mathematics" 4th Edition by A. J. Washington and M. F. Triola; as well as a TI 36X calculator.
The course will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am until 11:30 am starting May 12, 2009 and ending August 20, 2009.
Any student may take this course to increase their overall math proficiency.
To register, contact The Centre for Continuing Education at (807) 475-6550.
Setup and Process
The course will consist of a maximum of four (4) modules plus a Pretest. The curriculum will be delivered by use of TLM (The Learning Manager) Centra, and 12 weeks of in-class and/or distance instruction.
The Pretest will be used to provide feedback to both the student and Professor about the needs and strengths of each student.
Students may take one (1) or more modules as meets their needs. Modules must be taken in order (lowest number to highest) because of pre-requisite knowledge.
Upon successful completion of the course, each student will receive a certificate stating the overall percent earned in the course as well as the percent earned in each completed module.
Evaluation
Depending upon the student’s intended program of study, the student will be required to take one (1) or more modules.
There will be a supervised hand written test at the end of each module. To be eligible to write the supervised hand written test, a student must have successfully completed all the TLM assignments and review assignments for that module.
Completion and evaluation of TLM computer assignments are subject to the following:
- A student must obtain a minimum of 80% on one of the first attempts or have completed three attempts at particular assignment (except cumulative review assignments) to proceed to the next assignment. A student who completes three attempts but does not achieve 80% on the last attempt must see his/her professor to be able to proceed to the next assignment.
- Those assignments, including the cumulative review assignments, which correspond to the competencies (topics) being tested in each in-class test, must be completed by the posted due dates.
- Each regular assignment is equally weighted. Each cumulative review assignment is weighted twice as much as each regular assignment. A student may have only one attempt at each cumulative review assignment.
- If a student achieves 80% on one of the three possible attempts, the student’s mark for that assignment will be an average of the marks for each attempt completed.
- If a student does not achieve 80% on one of the three possible attempts, the student’s mark for that assignment will be an average of the marks for all possible attempts. Zero will be assigned as the mark for any attempt not completed.
For each module; the TLM assignments are valued at 20%, review assignments (non TLM) are valued at 5%, and the supervised hand written test is valued at 75%.
One (1) rewrite will be allowed for each supervised hand written test with the better mark being used.
Students who require one (1) or more modules of this course as a prerequisite for entry into a program must achieve a weighted module average of 50% or better overall.
Each module is equally weighted and a student must achieve a 60% or better in each required module to achieve any equivalence in their intended program.
Students will be graded according to College policy as follows:

Equivalencies
Programs may give equivalencies to a current math course if a student meets the criteria.
In the School of Engineering, I will give students equivalence for MA131 and MA100 if he/she obtains at least 60% in each of the four modules.
